Types Of New Slots

slot vegas megasquadsWhen slot games first became available in land-based casinos, everything was much simpler. There was just a single variation of them, and everyone was satisfied. However, as gamers, we always want more from our chosen games. That’s why slots began to expand, alter, introduce more features and so on.

With the rise of online and mobile casino gaming, slot games pretty much went through a revolution. This led to various types of online slots being created and made available for players to access. Now, this doesn’t mean that the original classic three-reel slots disappeared. These remain very much accessible today. They have simply been joined by a variety of other types. What else can casino gamers look forward to when it comes to the types of slots found at online casinos today?

3 Reel Classic

These slots are representative of the original games found in land-based casinos. As their title suggests, they feature three reels for you to spin, and often have graphics within them that are a lot more basic. Newcomers to online slot gaming may find these to be a lot more appealing, as they provide a simple introduction to the genre. They don’t tend to have many, if any, special features built into them, either.

5 Reel

Also called video slots, these take the three-reel games and extend them by two more reels. However, they frequently contain much more in terms of higher quality graphics, inbuilt bonus features, expanded betting ranges and more. This ensures that they have much more visual appeal, and with additional reels, there’s more space for extra paylines. These 5-reel games can incorporate anywhere from 9-10 paylines right the way up to 243 ways to win and more.

Multi-Reel (6-Reel, etc)

Some developers have taken things a bit further where slots are concerned though, choosing to add even more reels into their setups. Some games include six or seven reels for you to spin, such as Raging Rhino and Zeus III from the WMS brand. Obviously, the layout will be a lot bigger to accommodate these reels, but you’ll also see some of these slots feature MegaWays to win, allowing you to win in up to 117,649 ways.

Fixed Jackpot

Some slots also contain jackpots that you’re able to win while spinning their reels. Generally speaking, a fixed jackpot is exactly how it sounds – the jackpot total is fixed as a maximum and this cannot alter. The value is able to be won in a way determined by the game rules, often by aligning a certain symbol on a certain payline or by making your way through a bonus round.

Progressive Jackpot

In stark comparison to the fixed jackpot slots, a progressive jackpot title will feature one or more values that continue increasing as you continue playing. Every time someone places a bet on a slot with a progressive jackpot, part of the wager will contribute to the pot. Again, these progressives can be won in a variety of ways, and sometimes quite randomly as well. Slots like Divine Fortune from Netent, Mega Moolah by Microgaming and Age of the Gods from Playtech all have progressive jackpots available to win.

Bonus & Feature

One of the biggest changes to slots throughout the years has been the introduction of bonus features and extra perks. While originally, games included a wild symbol as its sole highlight, games have expanded to include additional bonuses. These can come in the shape of free spins, scatter symbols, mystery symbols, bonus game rounds and more. Scatters and wilds can also have alternative variations of themselves built into games, so it’s not uncommon to find multiplier wilds or expanding wilds.

Multi-Payline

As the title suggests, multi-payline slots are different to the original slot design, as they feature more than a single payline. These lines can form wins in straight lines, zig zags and more. When multiple paylines are in operation, you’ll be able to win in anything from 5 ways right up to 50 ways and beyond. These games allow additional opportunities for you to form wins and receive pay-outs.

Multipliers

Slot games that feature multipliers, will allow you to form wins and then have them multiplied by the total displayed. Sometimes, a slot can feature multipliers that increase with every subsequent win, while others will see multipliers of specific values brought into effect via wild symbols or bonus symbols.

Mega Spin

If you have the opportunity to play more than one slot game within the same screen, then why wouldn’t you? This is what Mega Spin slots are all about, giving you the potential to have four, five, six and beyond sets of reels in-play on one and the same screen. It’s also common for these types of slots to have their own progressive jackpot features built into them, too.

Low Stakes

Slots with lower stakes available will cater nicely to new players, as they don’t allow for huge bets to be placed on them. So, you may find that they allow wagers of between £0.01 and £5 per spin, for example. Potentially, they will have stakes even lower than that maximum. The idea with these is that they provide much more of an introduction to slot gaming, and give those with smaller bankrolls the opportunity to spin some reels.

High Stakes

In complete polar opposite to low stakes slots, high stakes games present you with the possibility of placing much higher wagers on each spin. It’s not necessarily going to be the case that you’ll always win, but the larger your bet is on a game, the more opportunity you have of receiving a bigger reward when you make a winning combination.

Slots Providers and Developers

software providersNot only is there a variety of slot types available to access in the world, but a wide number of developers are responsible for creating these, too.

Of course, some have gone on to become mega powers in the industry, and others provide players with much more bespoke and unique slot offerings. So, which brands have become major developers in this sector?

Playtech

The Playtech brand was formed in 1999, and it has since risen to become one of the very largest forces in the gaming industry. Playtech has entered into numerous gaming sectors, not just slots. It also has its own progressive jackpot network of slots, and the developer provides its games to some of the world’s biggest online casino sites.

Netent

Netent, which was founded under the name of Net Entertainment in 1996, is a Swedish brand. It has since gone on to become one of the most successful providers of online slots and more. Netent has been responsible for creating such popular titles as Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest and Mega Fortune. As of 2020, the Netent brand has over 100 games in its portfolio, and a new one is released every month or so.

Microgaming

Operating as one of the most recognised names in the casino gaming industry, Microgaming’s road to success started in 1994. It was then that it launched the first online casino, Gaming Club. The company has also been responsible for creating some exceptional online slots, including the highly popular progressive jackpot Mega Moolah. The brand’s video slot range is quite extensive, with around 300 being on offer from the company.

IGT

International Game Technology (IGT) bases itself out of Nevada, and it has had quite the affinity with creating slot games over the years. It has crafted these for land-based establishments as well as online sites, making it quite the diverse company. IGT is known for having a good range of both three-reel and five-reel slot games, whilst also providing additional casino table games. The success of IGT is well-documented, having got its start in 1975.

Betsoft

As a developer specialising in 3D slot creations, Betsoft certainly stands out on its own merit. Some highly popular 3D titles have come from this brand, like It Came from…Venus! and After Night Falls. These games don’t omit certain special features though, ensuring that Betsoft titles provide a truly thrilling option to access. Games from the Betsoft brand are also certified by Technical System Testing, ensuring that they’re fair and safe for users.

Elk Studios

Another Swedish company, Elk Studios may have only been founded in 2012, but it has pumped out some killer games in that timeframe. With a bit more of a focus on mobile casino gameplay, this has pushed the company to the forefront in this area, with a mindset of releasing the best quality games on a more infrequent basis. This hasn’t stopped Elk Studios from becoming a top-quality developer though, with titles like Electric Sam, Hong Kong Tower and Taco Brothers all receiving critical acclaim.

iSoftBet

Basing itself out of London, the iSoftBet brand was founded back in 2010, meaning that it is celebrating its decade-long rung of operation. The company has crafted a large number of games within that time period too, such as Chef Mario and French Maid, amongst many others. iSoftBet also holds various gambling licences, including those from Alderney, Italy and Belgium. Some of the world’s best online casino sites incorporate slots from this developer.

Yggdrasil

Formed by a former Netent CEO in Fredrik Elmqvist, Yggdrasil opted to create online slots with exceptional graphics and high-quality gameplay. Needless to say, with titles like Cyrus the Virus. Dwarf Mine and Power Plant, it has succeeded with such. The company creates and releases new slots each month, ensuring that players have enough to go at in terms of great themes and inbuilt special features.

WMS

Another one of the longest-running game developers, Williams Interactive (WMS) has been in the industry since 1994, manufacturing game machines for land-based establishments out of Waukegan, Illinois. It didn’t take long for the games to also be brought into play in the online world, and in 2013, it became a fully owned subsidiary of Scientific Games for around $1.5 billion. The company does have a focus on the US market primarily, although possesses international offices in locations like Australia, Mexico, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Pragmatic Play

Still considered a newcomer to the scene, Pragmatic Play was actually set up in 2015. However, it has grown like wildfire in the few years since then, basing itself out of Sliema in Malta. It has received awards in the Software Rising Star category of the EGR B2B Awards and Best Digital Company at the Malta iGaming Excellence Awards, both in 2017. In general, Pragmatic Play releases two new slot games per month, which is stunning in comparison to some other companies.

Thunderkick

Innovation has always been at the heart of what Thunderkick has chosen to create, and it has taken this idea and completely stormed ahead with it. Not only does the company include exceptional themes into its slots, but their setups and methods of gameplay are totally unique. You only need to look at games like Babushkas or Flux or Fruit Warp to understand this. While Thunderkick, which bases itself out of Sweden, has not been operating for a long time, it certainly stands out amongst the masses.

Barcrest

You can’t knock a slot developer that has been creating games since 1968, and that’s precisely what Barcrest has to its name. Based in the United Kingdom, there was a point in time when nearly all pubs and casinos within the UK hosted games from this brand. The company was acquired by IGT in 1998, and then became a part of Scientific Games in 2011. Some of the developer’s most iconic slots remain operational today, such as Rainbow Riches and Hercules: High & Mighty.

Novomatic

Austrian brand Novomatic was founded back in 1980, and in the years after this, it has grown to become the world’s largest manufacturer of land-based game machines. Over 19,000 people are employed by the company around the world, and the company has a wonderful online presence, too. Novomatic’s primary focus has been on the creation of slot games, but some popular table games and such have also been crafted by it, too.

Blueprint Gaming

A UK company originally, Blueprint Gaming found itself being acquired by a large German gambling conglomerate in 2008. It was with this acquisition that the brand rose to even more prominence in the industry, in both land-based and online instances. The company has some very basic games in its catalogue, as well as some that feature extreme numbers of specialities. You’ll find entertaining titles from this brand including Buffalo Rising, Count Duckula and Fortunes of Sparta.

Big Time Gaming

Slot game developers can be found all over the world, as Australia’s Big Time Gaming (BTG) brand proves. However, even though the brand may have created some impressive slots throughout the years, it is perhaps most famous for its Megaways creation. This sees games including the feature to allow users to win in up to 117,649 different ways. Many other developers have signed into deals with BTG so as to be able to incorporate the Megaways feature into their titles.

Return To Player Percentage and Variance

rtpReturn to player percentage, or RTP as it is commonly abbreviated, is effectively the AVERAGE change of winning any given game or feature.  RTP can range from 99% to as low as 50%.  The lower the RTP the higher the house edge, i.e. the margin taken by the casino site.

Table games such as roulette, blackjack and baccarat have a high RTP, which is why they are excluded or restricted for most bonuses.  Slots on the other hand vary but typically online they are above 90%.  Land-based slot machines tend to have lower RTP compared to online due to the higher overheads in running them.

A good online slot game will have an RTP between around 94-96%.  Taking an example of a slot with a 95% RTP this will mean, on average, players will be paid out £95 for every £100 staked.

It is important to remember the RTP is an average payout level and games have different pay-scales that means the actual chances of winning something on a given spin can be different in two separate games, even if the RTP is the same.  This is known as variance and defines how the RTP is actually realised.

Games with high top prizes or with a lot of prizes within bonus features will typically pay out less at a lower level in the basic game, these are known as high variance games. Games with lower top prizes and less bonus features will often pay out more at a lower level in the basic game, these are known as low variance games.  The type of game that is best for you depends on how you play, whether you are interested in lots of smaller wins or less bigger wins.

In general looking for a higher RTP is going to give you more value in the longer term if you play a lot as your average chances of winning are higher.  There are even progressive jackpot games that can reach certain levels where the RTP is technically in favour of the player.  Some slots are excluded from bonuses, typically these are the high RTP slots, such as Bloodsuckers (98%).

Scratchcards & Instant Win Games

instant win games and scratchcardsIt is worth noting that while slots tend to have good RTP rates this is not always true of other games within casino/games sections on sites.  Two good examples are scratchcards and instant win games, here the RTP is often much lower generally in the 70-90% region. These games tend to be low stakes and are very easy to play, making them attractive, but it is worth bearing in mind that they represent poor value per play vs other games.

You can usually easily find the RTP for these games in the game information and if you do want to play instant win games at least look for the ones that have better return to player percentages.

Game Crashes and Errors

game crashes

Newer slots tend to have more bugs, naturally because they are newer and there has been less time to iron out any issues.  Therefore new games can be more liable to crashes and errors but in general these are still rare and in the majority of cases players do not lose winnings as a result.  Still, it is worth being aware of the main reasons for game crashes and what you can do if you think you’ve lost out because of it.

Internet Connection Dropouts

This is by far the most common reason games stop working when you are playing online.  Luckily instant play games are hosted on servers, which means even thou you may not be able to see the result of the bet you’ve placed the spin/hand will continue and the next time you login and launch the game you will be able to see the result of that final spin/hand.One big negative here is if you are in the middle of an in game feature or trying to hit a time limited jackpot then you could lose that progress, which is why it is recommended where possible to play games with a consistent connection.  For example, it is generally better to play over wi-fi vs a mobile network.

Other common tips if playing on mobile would be to switch between 4G/5G and wi-fi if one is not working, in order to carry on playing.

Accidentally Closing A Game

It is very common to accidentally close a window when trying to maximise or minimise the page, which can lead you to closing a game in the middle of an actual spin, especially if you are using the automatic spin function.Similar to connection dropouts this should not cause an issue as your spin at the time of closure will be stored on the server and when you relaunch the game you should see the result of that spin.  You could however lose progress in any in game feature, depending on the game and type of feature.

Server Errors

Server errors are more of an issue as that is where the game itself is hosted.  These errors are very rare these days because of the security and redundancy software providers have but they do occasionally happen.  In these situations if you have just won and the game crashed it may not have been recorded. If that is the case and the game is frozen the best thing you can do is take a screenshot that shows the result of the final spin, this way you can present that to the site as proof of the win.  This still does not mean they will pay you out as there are terms and conditions that cover errors like this but it always worth a try.

Incorrect Payouts

The fact that games are software driven means incorrect payouts are also rare but there can be bugs in the code that can sometimes result in the incorrect value being assigned to certain combinations.  If these combinations are rare or unique then can happen, for new games especially, if these do not get picked up in the development stage. If this happens again take a screenshot if you can and keep a record of the time, what the payout was and why you think it is incorrect.  This can then be used to support your case.

If the incorrect payout is in your favour and is an obvious error then companies will have it stated in their terms that they can refuse to pay you out, but they must be able to prove the error.

Never Ending Reels

Anyone who plays games online a lot will have seen this before, making a spin only to see the reels never actually stop.  The first thing to do is wait as this is often down to connection issues, when the connection reestablishes the spin will complete. If not then take a screenshot, close the game and then re-launch.  You should then either see the result of the spin or the stake amount back in your balance.

Graphics Errors

Errors in graphics can cause issues where the a game shows you one set of symbols or cards but actually records another, which can of course lead you to think you’ve won when you haven’t or vice versa. This was a common problem in the past with download casinos but is almost unheard of in modern instant play games.  If this does happen to you the best evidence you can take is a screenshot.  Again, if the error is obvious and they can prove it they can refuse a payout if in your favour.

Loading Errors

Games not loading can be irksome but most of the time you won’t lose out because of it.  There are times though when you need to load a game, to use free spins, for example, or to use a specific bonus that might be time limited.Options include trying a different browser, switching from app to the website (or vice versa) and contacting the brand to see if they are aware of the error.  Other than that all you can do is either wait or go play the game with another site.
